Tough Weekend For The Red Hawks
The Red Hawk volleyball team competed in the GRCC raider challenge this weekend.
On day one the team went five games with Carl Sandburg (25-22, 25-27, 27-25, 12-25, 8-15) and Mott Community College, ranked # 2 on the East Side of the State (19-25, 25-21, 15-25, 25-19, 11-15). We were not able to secure the win, but the team fought well and worked hard all day.
Day two the team took on Oakland Community College, the #1 team on the East side. The Red Hawks defeated the raiders 25-23, 18-25, 25-19, 25-21. In the second match, they met up with Grand Rapids Community College, which is currently #1 from the North Side. Despite our efforts, GRCC swept the Red Hawks in three (25-15, 25-19, 25-11). The Raider's offense and serving paved the way to their success. Offensive leader of the tourney was Karissa Gest with 49 kills, a .283 hitting percentage, three aces, 29 digs, one solo block and three assist blocks. Abi Nunez was not far behind with 41 kills, two assists, one ace, and 55 Digs. Hayleah Mcfadden contributed 19 kills, one assist, 15 digs, three solo blocks and two assist blocks; while Gabby Cuthbert earned 12 kills, seven digs, three solo blocks and one assist block. In the middle, Faith Lewis had 16 kills, three assists, five digs, nine solo blocks, and seven assist blocks. Jeremara Blackmon also added 14 kills, two digs, three solo blocks, and two assist blocks. The defensive leader of the tourney was Teagan Giannunzio with 62 digs, one kill, 18 assists, and three aces. Other contributors in the back row were Leiana Butler with 37 digs and two aces; while Emma Hasse had 27 digs, one kill, one assist, and five aces. Olivia Deeb as the setter ran the offense smoothly and efficiently earning 125 assists, nine kills, 11 aces, 50 digs, one solo block and two assist blocks. It was a great weekend to help the team prepare for Regionals in November. The team is currently 18-6 overall, and 5-0 in conference. The team travels to Southwestern Michigan College on Tuesday 10/4 to wrap up round 1 of conference play.
