Grand Rapids outscored the Lady Red Hawks 22-17 in the first quarter and led 34-29 at halftime after both teams scored 12 points in the second quarter. Lake Michigan outscored Grand Rapids 18-14 in the third quarter and 15-14 in the final quarter to force overtime with the game tied at 62. In the first overtime, both teams scored seven points (69-69), but in the second overtime, the Lady Raiders held a 9-6 advantage for the final 78-75 score.
For the game, both teams shot 34% from the field. Lake Michigan did shoot 77% from the free throw line (compared to 52% for Grand Rapids), but the Lady Raiders out-rebounded the Lady Red Hawks 61-57.
Five players were in double-figures for Lake Michigan, led by sophomore Morgan Hughes who had 21 points. Sophomores Delaney Basker had 16 points, Aymia Flowers had 13 points, Elasia Craig had 12 points and LaChelle Knox chipped in 10 points. Basker also had 13 rebounds and Craig had 10 rebounds and a game-high eight blocks.
After the game, Head Coach, Patrick Daniel stated "Tough game to lose after playing two overtimes. Give Grand Rapids credit for being able to execute at the end and making the necessary play to win the game. I am proud of our effort and not quitting especially after being down in the first half, but we certainly have to learn how to execute when given the opportunities at the end of games. Tough lesson to learn but it can only make us better."
The Lady Red Hawks (5-7, 0-1 in MCCAA Western Conference) return home on Wednesday, January 8 when they host Glen Oaks Community College (9-3, 1-0 MCCAA Western Conference). Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
