Lady Red Hawks Win Conference Opener

The Lake Michigan College Women’s Basketball team kicked off the 2019 year in impressive fashion winning their Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) opener, 76-46 over Ancilla College.

Right from the tip-off, the Lady Red Hawks jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and never looked back as their defensive pressure made it very difficult for Ancilla to score in the first quarter. Lake Michigan led 22-12 going into the second quarter. The Lady Red Hawks continued to score on offense, but struggled in fouling Ancilla, allowing the Lady Chargers to score from the free throw line. Lake Michigan still outscored Ancilla 20-15 in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 42-27 advantage.

Coming out of halftime, Lake Michigan extended their defensive pressure and again forced Ancilla into turnovers which allowed the Lady Red Hawks to score easy points. Lake Michigan held the Lady Chargers to just six points in the third quarter, while scoring 20 points. Going into the final quarter, the Lady Red Hawks extended their lead to 29 points (62-33).

In the fourth quarter, both teams struggled to score, but Lake Michigan outscored Ancilla 14-13 for the final 76-46 score. The Lady Red Haws improves to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in the MCCAA.

After the game, Head Coach, Patrick Daniel stated "Very happy and proud of our effort tonight in our first conference game of the year. Really happy with our total team defense and that is going to be key for us going forward against some very good teams in this conference".

For the game, Lake Michigan shot 42% (30-70), while defensively holding Ancilla to just 21% (12-55). As a team, the Lady Red Hawks outrebounded Ancilla 58-28, forced 26 turnovers, had 21 steals, and six blocks.

Jayla Bibbs led Lake Michigan with 22 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals, and five assists. Samantha Jenkins also scored in double figures with 17 points, including shooting 3-4 in three point shooting and she had seven steals. Monae Palmer had 10 rebounds and Taylor Cegelis had four blocks.

Lake Michigan returns to MCCAA play on Saturday, January 5, 2019 when they travel to Kellogg Community College with a 1:00 PM tip off.
