Lady Red Hawks Began Their Season Over The Weekend
The Lady Red Hawks traveled to Lansing Community College on Saturday and hosted Oakland Community College on Sunday, March 21, 2021.
The women traveled to Lansing Community College on Friday, for their first games of the season, and ended the day with a split. Angela Schmidt took to the mound and the Lady Stars came out on all cylinders. They scored in the first, second, fourth and sixth inning. Lake Michigan had a slow start only scoring two runs in the top of the sixth, which was not enough, and the women fell 9-2. Jena Nate, Angela Schmidt, Kiarra Herson, Sydney Payne, and Madi Vollman all produced singles for the women. Vollman also had two RBI's.
The second game had a whole new tempo, with Madi Vollman on the mound, for the women scoring a run in the first inning. They scored another in the top of the third but Lansing tied the game in the bottom of the inning making the score 2-2. Lake Michigan went on a hitting spree and scored two runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth. The Lady Stars answered back scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth and took the lead. It wasn't over for the Lady Red Hawks, they were able to rally and scored three runs in the top of the seventh, going up by one run. Karissa Gilpin took to the mound to close it out. Lansing was able to produce back to back singles allowing a runner to advance to third and first. The pressure was on and the defense of the middle infielders, Sydney Payne and Jena Nate, gave the women two outs by catching two pop flies. The third out was due to an amazing line drive catch down third baseline made by Sam Stewart, for the 9-8 win.
Ashley Jankowski lead the women with three hits and an RBI. Angela Schmidt and Vollman, who hit a home run, had two hits with an RBI. Halle Jennings had two hits while Kiarra Herson and Sydney Payne both singled.
The women then took to the field for their first home games versus Oakland Community College. The starter of the first game was Karissa Gilpin and it was looking good for the Lady Red Hawks. They scored one in the first and one in the third. The Lady Raiders took the lead in the third and scored three more in the fourth making the score 6-2. Lake Michigan answered back in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs to tie the game. Errors plagued the women and Oakland scored three more in the sixth and one in the seventh. The Lady Red Hawks tried to fight back but was only able to score one more run in the fifth losing the game 10-7.
Kiarra Herson led the women with three hits while Angela Schmidt and Sam Stewart both had two hits. Sydney Payne, Sophie Hover, Halle Jennings, Madi Vollman, Alexis Love, and Jena Nate all had hits respectively.
The second game started off like the first for the Lady Red Hawks. The Lady Raiders came out scoring two in the first while the Lake Michigan took the lead in the bottom of the second. Errors began to strike the women again and Oakland pushed ten runs across in the top of the third. The Lady Red Hawks began to chip away at the score by pushing across three runs in the bottom of the third. They left the Lady Raiders scoreless the remainder of the game but could not catch up losing the game 12-8.
Kiarra Herson led the women again with four hits, including a double and a triple with two RBI's. Sydney Payne had two singles while Jena Nate had two singles and an RBI. Halle Jennings and Anna Castelluccio both had doubles while Angela Schmidt hit a single with an RBI.
The women will head to Jackson Community College on March 26, 2021 for a 3:00 and 5:00pm game.
