Roadrunners Rally Late to Edge Red Hawks, 79-76
Southwestern Michigan College erased a halftime deficit and held off a late push to defeat Lake Michigan College 79-76 on Saturday, Jan. 31.
The Red Hawks led 44-36 at the break after shooting efficiently in the opening 20 minutes, but Southwestern Michigan flipped the script in the second half, outscoring LMC 43-32 to secure the three-point win.
Southwestern Michigan shot 51.9 percent from the field and converted 22-of-31 free throws, overcoming 19 turnovers.
Lake Michigan College was led by Javaughn Kuykendoll’s 21 points off the bench on 10-of-14 shooting. Malik Raines added 19 points, while Caleb Gatewood chipped in 16. The Red Hawks struggled to maintain their first-half momentum, shooting 42 percent from the field and just 10-of-14 at the line.
LMC finished with a 33-30 rebounding edge but was limited to 32 second-half points as Southwestern Michigan tightened defensively down the stretch.
With the loss, the Red Hawks fall short in a tightly contested conference matchup despite three players scoring 16 or more points.
