Men Win Over Vikings
Monday night proved to be another step in the right direction for the Red Hawks Men’s Basketball program defeating Glen Oaks Community College at home.
For the second time in three days, the Red Hawks faced Glen Oaks Community College and won both matchups. With Monday night's win, the Red Hawks extended their win streak to three games and have won four out of their last five.
After going down 16 points in the first half, multiple defensive efforts and timely scoring led to a half-time deficit of 40-31; just a nine-point difference. With hopes of entering the MCCAA Tournament on the minds of the entire team, changes needed to be made.
Adjustments, were indeed, made and the Red Hawks stormed out of half-time and leaned on team defense to claw back into the game. Derrick Campbell and Brian Hunter Jr. took over the second half on the offensive end while Jadon Williams and Dewey Shannon helped anchor the Red Hawks' defensive effort.
The game came down to the final three possessions. Dewey Shannon took a defender off the dribble and hit a fall-away shot along the baseline to put the Red Hawks up 73-31. The very next possession, Brian Hunter Jr. and Dewey Shannon altered a layup attempt at the rim and secured the rebound, which led to the Viking fouling Brian Hunter Jr, who knocked down two free throws to secure the victory for the Red Hawks.
Derrick Campbell led all scorers with 21 points, adding seven assists, four rebounds and two steals. Brian Hunter Jr. added to the offensive effort, scoring 16 points while adding three rebounds and three steals. Dewey Shannon added another double-double to his collegiate resume, adding 13 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and three assists. Micai Johnson rounded out the top scorers with 10 points and added five rebounds and three assists.
The Red Hawks look to extend their win-streak at home Wednesday, February 16th against Kellogg Community College.
