Men Win At Home
The men hosted Hope College JV and won 91-70.
The battle on November 13, 2021 between Lake Michigan College and Hope College's JV squad was not particularly close as the Red Hawks held the lead throughout the entire game.
The first two minutes of the game started off slow, but suddenly, a switch flipped. A steal by Sophomore captain Jumauca Golliday (SO.) led to a left-handed flush by Jocorian Freeman (FR.) on the other end for two of his 13 points. On the very next play, Nigel Johnson (FR.) read the ball-handler's eyes, shot through the passing lane for a steal, and threw down a two-handed dunk and the Red Hawks were thriving. Despite a poor shooting night from beyond the three-point arc, the Red Hawk's stifling defense help the Flying Dutch to just 26 points in the first half.
The Flying Dutch came out ready in the second half, but the Red Hawks continued to rebound the ball exceptionally well (35 defensive, 28 offensive) and score easily in the paint, leading to a 91-70 victory.
Derrick Campbell (FR.) led all scorers with 15 points and added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Brian Hunter Jr. (FR.) and Abdoulaye Ba (FR.) both grabbed seven rebounds. Meanwhile, Clayton Roberts (FR.) bolstered the second unit with his first collegiate double-double at 10 points and 10 rebounds. Freeman also added three rebounds and four steals to go along with his 13 points.
"We still haven't hit our stride offensively, yet we found a way to score 91 points" Coach Rickey Hampton said of the struggles from three-point range. "We're getting good, outside looks. Those shots are going to start falling."
The Red Hawks (2-2) look to extend their two-game win streak as they travel to Andrews University (1-6) in their second meeting of the season on Thursday, November 18, 2021 at 7:30pm.
