The Red Hawks hosted their first Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference double header against Muskegon Community College. The fell in the first game 1-3 and won the second 5-3.
Lake Michigan fell behind early in the first game as the Jayhawks scored one run in the second and two in the third inning. The Red Hawks were able to score one the in the third but due to poor base running and the defensive play by Muskegon the men fell 1-3.
Howie Ewing (SO/Ottawa Lake, MI) started the game for Lake Michigan and allowed five hits and struck out four batters. Three runs scored but they were all unearned. Kyle Liddle (FR/Saranac, MI) took to the mound to finish the game and was able to strike out one and did not allow any runs nor hits.
Brady Duval (FR/Niles, MI) hit a double for the men and was able to score from Damion Pompey (SO/Cassopolis, MI)'s single. Dalton Riddle (FR/Buchanan, MI) and Chad Adkerson (FR/Buchanan, MI) also hit singles for the Red Hawks.
In the second game, Dalton Riddle came out and dominated the mound and shut out the Jayhawks the first two innings. Lake Michigan was able to score in the first inning and it looked hopeful for the Red Hawks. Muskegon was then able to take the lead for a brief moment in the top of the third inning. Lake Michigan answered back and took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning due to a home run hit by Chad Adkerson. The Jayhawks remained persistent and tied the game in the top of the sixth but it was Zach Banks that stepped up and hit a two run homer to close out a 5-3 sixth inning. Riddle was able to continue to dominate and shut down the Jayhawks in the seventh to take his first win of the season.
Dalton Riddle pitched all seven innings and had three earned runs with seven hits and one strike out. He also battled offensively hitting two singles.
Chad Adkerson and Zach Banks both had two RBI's and a homerun each to aid in the win. Cole Searles (FR/Niles, MI) and Brant Rago (FR/Berrien Springs, MI) also hit singles.
The men will travel to Muskegon Community College to finish the conference series for a doubleheader tomorrow, March 23, 2018 at 2:00 pm.
