Lake Michigan hit the road this afternoon to take on St. Clair Community College in Port Huron, Michigan and fell short two points losing 85-87.
It was a back and forth game throughout, starting in the first half when the men were only down by three points (17-20) with ten minutes to go. The Red Hawks continued to put pressure on the Skippers and left the court leading 39-37 after the first half. Lake Michigan out shot St. Clair in the field goals range, shooting 40.5% to the Skippers 37.1%. They also led from the three point range, shooting 30% compared to the Skippers 28.6%, which aided in the Red Hawks lead. The men lacked in shooting free throws as St. Clair out shot them 77.8% to 66.7% to end the half.
The second half was a lot like the first, with both teams battling but Lake Michigan pulled ahead by four points with eighteen minutes remaining. St. Clair did not back down and fired off on all pistons as they soon pushed pass the Red Hawks obtaining a ten point lead with six minutes left in the game. Lake Michigan did not give up and continued to find opportunities in the paint closing the gap by two with sixteen seconds. They were able to gain control of the ball but could not connect with the rim and lost 85-87 against the strong St. Clair squad. The Skippers held Lake Michigan in the second half in all areas of the game only allowing them to shoot 42.1% in the field goal range and 28.6% outside of the paint. The men were successful shooting 70.6% from the free throw line.
James Smith (SO/Chicago, IL) led the men with 28 points and had 7 rebounds as Deion Gatson (SO/Cassopolis, MI) led the men with 9 rebound and 19 points. Gavin Rasler (SO/Niles, MI) also came in big scoring 14 points with 4 rebounds and 2 steals.
The men will travel to Joliet Junior College on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 8:00 pm (EST).
