Red Hawks Faced Strong Pioneer Squad

The Red Hawks hosted the Pioneers and fell to the #16 ranked team,in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II polls, 85-100.

The Red Hawks were coming off a long break from playing and it showed as Delta dominated the court right out of the gate. The Pioneers were successful with their pick and roll moves to gain ground against Lake Michigan in the paint. The men did not give up and continued to battle but could not connect with the basket. The teams left the half with Delta ahead 48-34.

The second half looked a lot like the first, as the Pioneers came out and controlled the court by putting pressure on the Lake Michigan offense. The Red Hawks also had difficulty keeping up defensively with the pace of the Delta offense, even though they were able to make adjustments. The men still did not give up and continued to push through and drew several fouls. The men were very successful at the line shooting 70% compared to Delta's 61% in free throws. But Delta made up for it in their 63% from the field goal range, which was huge gap from Lake Michigan's 34% inside the paint. This was a factor in the 85-100 Red Hawks loss.

James Smith (SO/Chicago, IL) was the point leader scoring 18 points with 2 assists, and 3 rebounds. Deion Gatson (SO/Cassopolis, MI) was able to produce 17 points with 4 assists, 1 steal, and 3 rebounds. Malik Hall (SO/Benton Harbor, MI) was the top rebounder with 5 and also scored 9 points.

The men will travel to St Clair Community College on Monday, December 18, 2017 with a game time start of 7:30 pm.
